Food and Drink Business
The Telegraph, Sydney
When Delwyn Tuanui left the Chatham Islands for university in Australia, he knew he wanted to find a better way of exporting the Islands’ primary products. Five years on he has established a specialist food business— Chatham Island Food Co—supplying Australia’s best restaurants and flying the flag for Chatham Island seafood across the Tasman.
Surrounded by the cruel and punishing blue yonder of the Pacific, the Chatham Islands are sometimes New Zealand’s forgotten region. Isolated from the mainland by over 700km of unforgiving ocean, the challenges involved in getting local produce to market are huge and expensive. But Delwyn Tuanui is convinced the flavour and freshness of this island fare is unique and world class. And eventually he believes the isolation that many see as a barrier will become the Chathams’ greatest asset.
